Have you ever tried meditation? The first time I can remember meditating was in college. I was taking a class on Buddhism and as part of our assignment, we were asked to meditate or do a mindfulness practice and write about it. I don’t remember much about it, other than that I had weird dreams that night. Even though I wasn’t really sold on meditation then, I decided to give it another try in recent years.
Rob told me about this app, Headspace, that he had downloaded and really enjoyed, so I figured I’d give it a go. Work was crazy and stressful at that point, so why not take 10 minutes each day to breathe, relax and slow my brain down? I love the parts of yoga where we did breathing exercises and focused on clearing our minds, so I had a feeling that I was going to like meditation.
It can be an uncomfortable or unnatural thing to do, or even sound, as my dad says, a little hokey, but I promise, it’s a game-changer and can be a really powerful tool! Plus the benefits of meditation are pretty awesome! I’ll admit that I don’t mediate on a regular basis, but I find it especially helpful when I’m having a stressful week or am I anxious about something. Here’s why you should give it a try…

Sitting down to meditate in itself is relaxing. Focusing on nothing but your breathe is a challenge, but it’s one that makes you aware of something so simple. By then end of the session, I usually feel super relaxed and even recharged.

Overtime, meditating helps you learn to manage your stress and anxiety and lower it. In a pinch, a quick meditation sesh can help instantly calm you down after a stressful encounter.
3. It Helps You Focus
Taking some time to clear your mind is so healthy. When you open your eyes, you’ll feel more level and even a bit rested, making it easier to focus on what you still need to do that day.
4. It Makes Your Days More Calm
Starting your day with a meditation session sets you on a positive and calm path for the rest of your day. As you continue to practice meditation, you’ll find that you’re calmer and more at peace throughout the days, and that little annoyances aren’t quite as disruptive as they once were.

You don’t have to have a guide to walk you through meditation, though I do enjoy that Headspace walks me through it. It keeps me on track and when my brain starts wandering, it pulls me back. They have a 10-day free trial that’s great!
After writing that, all of those things are sounding pretty good, so I’m going to go do a little meditation myself. If you don’t know where to start, I surely didn’t, I highly recommend Headspace. After the trial, you do have to purchase it, but it’s so worth it! There’s different lengths and levels of meditation and even specific series for specific situations like fear of flying, sleeping, relationships and more. And no, this is not sponsored, I just really love this app! I also love spraying one of these chakra mists on my chest before doing meditation. The scents are a relaxing and peaceful addition to an already calming practice!
