Hashtags – whether you love them or hate them, you need to be using them. When I first really started using Instagram, I really didn’t understand the point of a hashtag. I thought they looked stupid and annoying and my design brain didn’t see a place for them — in my head, they just junked up a pretty picture and nice caption.
Fast forward a few years and I now realize how stupid I was to not use hashtags. If you didn’t already know, hashtags are incredible discovery tools and have helped me grow my audience with right readers. What do I mean by the right readers? I mean like-minded readers who like the content that I’m posting and are actively searching out content like this. They’re more engaged in conversation and more likely to share your account with their friend.
When you’re thinking about a hashtag strategy, it’s best to think about the brands you wear all the time. I hashtag #nordstrom, #jcrew, #anthropologie all the time. I always get more ‘Likes’ on that post and more new followers than I usually would. If you have a very distinct image style try looking at accounts with a similar style and see what hashtags they’re using. If you always post vibrant and bright images, check out the hashtag #ABMlifeiscolorful or #WandeleurSpark, for more muted images, try #thatsdarling and #thehappynow. Obviously those are just a very select few, but start doing your research and I’m sure you’ll start seeing trends emerging across accounts that you follow and love.
While this might be one of the easiest ways to grow your Instagram following, it doesn’t happen overnight. It’s organic growth for sure, but you’re also a lot more likely to get quality followers that actively engage in your content, and engagement is really valuable!
So tell me, what are your favorite hashtags to browse and use? Any that work particularly well for you?!
