Have you seen the movie, It’s Complicated? It stars Meryl Streep and Alec Baldwin and might just be one of my favorite movies ever, but not for the reasons you might think.
From a plot standpoint, I actually do think it’s pretty funny, but the thing that hooked me and makes me feel better about watching it over and over again is Meryl Streep’s character. I want her job, her house, her vegetable garden and her kitchen.
All of it really, well, other than the divorce. Hard pass on that.
The first time I saw the movie, I was enamored with her career. She owns a bakery/cafe that serves up homemade bread and pastries, skills she learned from her time spent in France (ugh, can she get any cooler?).
If I had all the money in the world, I would totally open a shop like this. I’d sell homemade bread and have a café side that served brunch as well as fresh salads, soups and sandwiches—basically, all of my favorite food groups.
Oh, and cold-pressed juices. And good coffee…. and wine! I love the European café culture and wish that slowed-down way of life was something that was valued more in America. I’m getting sick of all the busy-ness—are you?
When I’m sitting on a sidewalk café drinking any of the three previously mentioned beverages, it’s like all my worries melt away, and everything in that moment is exactly how life should be.
Things get better when we get to Meryl’s house. Her kitchen isn’t that big, in fact, it’s on the small side, but you can just tell it’s one of those kitchens where magic happen. It’s cozy and inviting—the kind of kitchen where all of your friends and family gather over drinks and snacks before moving into the dining room for dinner.
Her garden is a close second. It’s full of fresh vegetables and herbs—ingredients she puts to good use in her little kitchen. When life gets crazy and hectic, I envy the solitude, and peace and quiet that working in a garden would bring. I don’t have a garden or a green thumb, but it’s on my list for the future.
I suppose this all very telling about my relationship with food. It’s a good relationship. But, it’s less about what’s being served and more about what happens around the table. The gathering, the conversation, the laughter, the awkward conversations that make for hilarious stories later.
That’s why I really love food.
Something about that movie and Meryl’s character brought that out. She embodied so many things that I love and hope to someday have. The inviting kitchen and garden? Those are dreams I’m not giving up on.
Speaking of dreams, this cute dress is only $35! Yup, that’s right. I’m shocked by the quality too, I was expecting it to be kinda crappy considering the price, but it’s not! Here are a few more super cute dresses under $35…

But, no, I probably won’t have a bakery or café like Meryl’s character and really, I’m okay with that. I actually love my job—it’s creative, really fun, allows me to travel when I want, and gives me the freedom to plan and schedule my days as I see fit. I couldn’t do that with a bakery, though I like the idea! So, maybe I’m already doing my dream job? Some days it doesn’t feel like it, but writing this was a good reminder that I’m pretty dang lucky.
So, tell me! What’s your dream job? Are you already doing it? What other dreams (like my kitchen and garden) do you have?
