When I first moved to Chicago and was working from my home, my daily routine was a total mess. One morning I’d get up at 7 and be totally productive and the next day I’d sleep until 11 and then rush around like a crazy lady all day long.
Since then, I’ve adopted several different habits that aid in making my morning routine simple, smooth and far more enjoyable than it used to be. A few of them require a little bit of forward planning, but overall it makes it totally worth it.
1. Stock Your Closet with Basics
Getting dressed in the morning can either be the easiest thing or one of the most frustrating. I’ve found that having my closet stocked with basics that I love and that go with everything make my morning so much easier. I recently got this silk tank from Everlane and I’m obsessed with it. It’s comfortable, goes with anything and depending on what I pair it with can be dressy or casual. Since I work from home, it’s usually jeans for me and last week it was these ripped jeans. I love this outfit paired with these mules for a pulled together, but comfortable every day outfit.
2. Make an Easy Breakfast
I can’t skip breakfast in the morning. If I do, I turn into a grumpy and un-productive person. To keeps things simple in the morning I opt for a quick egg scramble, but my other favorite (and extra quick) breakfast is non-fat Greek yogurt with granola, fresh berries and a little drizzle of honey!
3. Pack Your Work Bag Before
I only do this on days when I’m working from a coffee shop, but my morning goes so much more smoothly if I’ve already gathered up all the things I need and put them in my bag. If I don’t, I typically waste at least 20 minutes searching for all the things I need to bring in the morning.
4. 10 Minute Nightly Clean Up
I stole this one from The Happiness Project, but it’s genius! Typically I do this when Rob is out walking Oliver. I set a timer at night for 10 minutes and just go around the house tidying up, fluffing pillows, putting away dishes, putting clothes up, etc. It’s crazy how much I can get done in just ten minutes when it’s all I’m focusing on! Waking up a tidy house each morning makes me infinitely happier and more calm!
5. Wake Up 15 Minutes Earlier
Just like ten minutes of cleaning at night makes my mornings so much better, waking up just fifteen minutes earlier than normal sets my day off on the right note. I’ve never been a morning person, but when I can get myself out of bed, I absolutely love the feeling! I feel like I’ve gotten a huge jump start and typically that helps carry me through the day on a great note.
6. Make Coffee at Home
If you stop at a coffee shop to get your morning joe, consider making coffee at home to save some time. We invested in a Nespresso maker that makes amazing cappuccinos, espressos and lattes and saves me time and a whole lot of money every day. It was a bit of an investment up front, but it’s been totally worth it and in the long run it’ll save me hundreds!
7. Shower the Night Before
I’ve always been one to shower at night. My hair takes forever to blow dry, so doing it at night and sleeping on it saves me time and allows and frizzes to calm down over night. All I have to do it style it when I’m getting ready and that definitely makes my mornings simpler!
8. Make Your To-Do The Night Before
Lastly, but maybe one of the most important for me! I make my to-do list for the next day at the end of my work day. Having a game plan for my day before I’m even awake allows me to plan more efficiently and make the most of my morning and the rest of my day. It also helps me fall asleep faster and sleep better the night before. Of course, things always pop up, but having a general idea of what needs to get done that day is hugely helpful in keeping me sane!
