Last week is a weird one, isn’t it? You know, that in between time after Christmas and before the New Year where everyone is still checked out for the holidays and you have no idea what day is it? I love that week. It’s quiet, stress-free and gives me some time to look back at 2017, revisit my old resolutions and think about what I want to accomplish in 2018. The fact that we’ve had below freezing temperatures for the past week is helping by keeping me cozied up inside.
Our New Year’s Eve was exactly what you’d expect with a newborn—relaxing! We stayed in, popped bubbly, watched a movie and went to bed before midnight—wild! I’m actually glad it’s been so cold because I don’t feel like I’ve missed anything! Did you do something fun to celebrate the New Year? I’d love to know, so I can live vicariously through you, ha!
Typically the first post of the year usually has something to do with resolutions and goals for a new year. I love writing these posts and reading others! I always feel like I know people a little better when I hear what they’d like to accomplish—learning a new language, picking up a new hobby, etc. Do you have any big goals or resolutions for yourself this year?
I usually have a long, overly ambitious list, but this year it’s much shorter. I’m still very much figuring out my new role as a mom, which is constantly changing, and how to fit the rest of my life—goals, passions and hobbies—inside that. It isn’t that easy though. One week I’ll feel like superwoman—I get myself and Owen dressed, I check things off my list and everything runs smoothly, only to be followed by a week where I live in my robe, order takeout every night and don’t get a single thing done. No matter how many books you read, nothing can fully prepare you for how different your life will be with a baby. The biggest lesson I’ve learned? Loosen those reins.
For a Type-A gal like myself, that’s much easier said than done. The past seven weeks have been challenging in ways I can’t even explain. I feel so lucky that I’ve healed quickly and didn’t experience any postpartum depression or anxiety (which I was really scared of), but there have been so many other struggles along the way. Did anyone else constantly worry that their baby would stop breathing in the night!?
Other than unreasonable baby concerns, the biggest challenge, or rather one question that’s looming, is how I’m going to balance running my business (aka, this blog) with a baby in the mix. Before Owen, I thrived off of checking things off my to-do list and loved my schedule—it kept me organized and stress free! But, everything has changed now! Some days I get stuff done, and some days I don’t. The closest thing that resembles a schedule is Owen’s somewhat predictable feeding habits—but, even that changes frequently. But, I love what I do and wouldn’t dream of stopping, but I know that my expectations of what’s possible will have to change, at least while Owen’s a tiny little guy.
It’s a work in progress, but I’m taking it one day at a time and trying not to worry about whether the floor gets vacuumed or if I get an Instagram post up or if I order takeout yet again. It’s teaching me to live in the moment and enjoy these sweet moments with Owen before they’re gone. Learning to let go of those little stresses has already made me feel more relaxed and confident about our new normal and that feels like a huge victory!
So, my resolutions, if you can call them that, look a little different this year. My top priority is to be a good mama to Owen. To help him learn, grow and feel loved! Okay, so that’s not really a resolution, but rather a lifetime goal! I also want to focus on Rob and I’s relationship by making time to connect. Whether that be a movie night at home or a date night out. It’s so easy to get caught up in all things that are baby, but I want to make sure that we keep our marriage healthy and happy as well.
My last resolution is to not forget about myself. We ate a fair amount of takeout since Owen was born and I’m looking forward to getting back to cooking and eating healthier meals as well as working out on a regular basis. I suppose that could sound selfish, but I know that if I’m taking care of myself and feeling fulfilled, then I’ll do those first two things a whole lot better.
As for this blog, thank you all for your feedback on the reader survey! It’s always so helpful to hear what you guys like and don’t like. I’m excited for the content I have planned this year! You can expect a lot of the same stuff as well as a more regular motherhood series—I’m still deciding on a day to post (any suggestions?), but I’ll let you guys know when I figure it out! I also plan on sharing a lot more personal stuff and real life content so I hope you continue to stick around and read!
And lastly, this sweater! I’ve loved the criss cross sweater look and finally bought one! I love that it looks a bit dressier than your average sweater which makes it perfect for date night! It’s not too thick, so definitely not the warmest, but it’s so cute. I paired it with leopard heels to dress it up a bit, but it would also look super cute with boots or booties!
