This week I’m feeling a little burned out. Do you ever get that way? I’ve been plenty busy and the approaching holidays have me wanting a little more downtime in my normal routine. Time to enjoy the little things in everyday life.
Something that bothers me about myself is that I feel guilty when I’m not busy. And it’s probably no surprise why, I read a lot of blogs, and sometimes it seems like if you take a break that you’ll get left behind by all those go-getters out there. But when I’m super busy, I sleep like crap, I’m stressed and frankly, it’s just not that fun.
I hate that when (and if) I get my work done early and then sit on the couch for the rest of the night, I later find myself crawling into bed thinking about how I ‘wasted’ the night and that I shouldn’t have been so ‘lazy’. But in reality, I’ve come to think I need more time like that. Instead of feeling guilty about it, I’m opting for a new attitude towards chilling out. I just want to ‘be’.
During my yoga class last night, the instructor kept reminding us to take that hour and slow down. Slow your mind down, breathe and just chill out. I really tried to focus on that thought and realized how difficult it was. I had to constantly remind myself to stop clenching my teeth, worrying about unanswered emails, the artwork I still hadn’t hung in my bedroom and the dishes I hadn’t cleaned.
I guess it was a bit of a wake up call of sorts. A good reminder to push the brakes and enjoy what I can do in the time available to me that day. To kick start my new attitude, I came home after yoga, left my email unanswered, didn’t hang the artwork, and sat on the couch and knitted. And I loved every second of it.
