A Heavy Heart

heavyheart

It’s been a week since the Boston bombings and I know everyone is thankful knowing one suspect is dead and the other has been captured. I can imagine that everyone in Boston is finally able to breathe and hopefully relax a bit knowing this.

If you’re anything like me, it seems like the real weight of a tragedy takes some time to fully set in. After reading the first headline, I knew it was a horrific tragedy, but for whatever reason the realness of it took a few more days to sink in. Tragedy isn’t an easy thing to just accept. We want to know who, what, where and for me the biggest question is why? Why why why?

I don’t expect to ever fully understand, but I do want to hear a terrorist’s reasoning. Why they thought bombing innocent runners & bystanders was going to fill some void in their life and what was so terrible in their lives that they needed to harm so many others? And at the end of all this, I wish I could ask, was it worth it? Did it solve the problem? Do you feel better?? Is living the rest of your miserable life in prison and having an entire nation hate you better than your previous life??? I’d like to think the answer is no.

I was watching the news on Friday and found myself tearing up and I realized that the realness had set in. I will never understand, but what I can be grateful for us that we found the guys. And personally, I found it really special to see our nation come together to find them. The amount of photos & videos that the FBI received was incredible and I know it aided in the relatively quick capture of the ones responsible.

I was also reminded to be so thankful for the good in the world. Tragedy has a way of bringing people together like nothing else. All prejudices go out the window and it’s just about protecting & saving the guy next to you. At the end of the day, I think we have to remember that though it’s crazy that two people caused such horrific incidents, there are thousands that came together as one to support each other. Two vs. thousands — the odds were never in their favor. For me, it’s a humbling reminder that good is better than evil and I’d like to think that good will always come out on top.
