For one of my birthdays I got an ice cream maker from my sisters. I used it so much when I first got it, but in the past few years, it hasn’t gotten as much use. But lately we’ve been eating a lot of Talenti Gelato (I’m obsessed with caramel cookie crunch) — oops — and it got me thinking about that ice cream maker again.
So I pulled it out last week and made one of my favorite flavors, spicy coffee and chocolate chip ice cream. Spicy?! Yes! The ice cream is made with chipotle chocolate chips! I know it sounds crazy, but it’s actually really really good. The combination of cold, creamy coffee ice cream and the subtle heat from the chocolate is really unique.
I got the idea for this flavor after one of my first few visits to Rob’s parents home in Colorado back in the early dating days. One night after dinner, we had ‘cowboy coffee’ which was decaf coffee with a dried chipotle pepper and a shot of whiskey. I’m glad the idea popped into my head, because the ice cream turned out so good!
Now, I’m off to finish the last of it!
