How to Buy a Designer Handbag You’ll Love Forever
I got my first designer handbag a few months after we got married. My Chloé Marcie bag was a gift from Rob and one that I continue to cherish even two years later. Since then I’ve realized that I would rather have a couple of really nice bags that I absolutely love than a closet full of bags I sort of like.
Over the past year I’ve been seriously thinking about buying a designer bag for myself. Is it just me or is there something empowering about buying something you love for yourself, just because. Within reason of course! If you can’t afford a Louis Vuitton or Chanel bag, please don’t buy one. I know I’m not buying either of those any time soon! But maybe you’ve been saving for months for something special, in that case, treat yourself!
Here are my tips for buying a designer handbag you’ll love forever…
1. Brands you Love
Chances are that if you’re considering a designer handbag, you already have a short list of your favorite designers. If not, it’s worth browsing to see which designers fit your style best. Is your style classic, modern, edgy or bohemian?! Understanding your own sense of style will help you make a better decision!
2. Price Point
Designer bags can get pricey, before you start your search, make yourself familiar with the average prices of the brands you love and set a budget for yourself. A good designer bag should last you a really long time, so don’t be afraid to invest in one that you really love!
A few of my favorite handbag designers are Burberry, Chloé, Fendi, Givenchy, Gucci, Jimmy Choo, Prada, Valentino and Yves Saint Laurent. I realize these brands aren’t the most affordable, so if your budget is lower, you should take a look at Henri Bendel, Kate Spade, Rebecca Minkoff and Tory Burch—they’re all amazing brands.
3. Style & Shape
Look in your closet, which bag(s) do you carry the most? Big satchels, convenient cross body bags? Big shopper totes?! Knowing what you use most is key in selecting a designer handbag. You want to invest in a bag that you know you’ll get a lot of use from.
When it comes to color, I always lean to the neutral side. Why? Because neutrals are timeless, classic and will pair well with nearly anything in your closet. If you’re going to be spending a pretty penny on it, you want to make sure you’re going to get a lot of use out of it! My personal favorites are tan, camel, brown, grey, and of course, black.
When I look at buying a new bag, I always go straight for cross body bags. Even if it’s a bigger satchel, I always make sure it has a cross body strap. It’s easier and more functional for travel and city life. My other requirement is that it has to be big enough to hold my camera! My personal favorite brands are Chloé, Chanel (can’t afford this yet!) & Rebecca Minkoff. I love the boho chic vibe and detail work on Chloé bags. I’be been eyeing this bag and this bag for over a year. I just got this feed bag in deep red—perfect for fall, don’t you think!?
One mistake of a designer bag? Not using it! So, my last tip for buying a designer bag is once you’ve purchased it, don’t be afraid to carry it!
