3 ways to wear a black sweater

Can you believe the holidays are just around the corner? With a big snow storm under out belts already, I’m really in the fall and holiday mood over here! I’ve gotten some requests for some good fall church outfits that will work through winter as well. It can be harder to figure out exactly what to wear during these cooler months.

When it comes to dressing for church, your outfit can often reflect not just your personal style, but also the dress code of your specific church.

Different churches can have varying levels of formality, ranging from laid-back and casual gatherings to more traditional services that call for elegant attire. Growing up in Texas, we dressed up for church, but now that I live in Denver, church services are far more casual. Jeans are totally acceptable and normal.

Understanding this can help you navigate your wardrobe choices effectively, ensuring you feel both comfortable and appropriate for the occasion. When in doubt, I’d always lean towards the dressier side, but maybe that’s just my traditional upbringing talking!

Fall Church Outfits to Wear this Season

Whether you prefer a relaxed vibe or lean towards something a bit more polished, there are many outfit options to consider. I’ve rounded up a variety of stylish outfits suitable for church, that cater to both casual and dressy preferences.

From soft layers that are comfortable and more casual, to dressier outfits that you could also wear for holiday church events, you’ll find inspiration that fits your style & your church’s vibe. Let’s dive into some outfit ideas that will help you express your style while maintaining respect for the setting.

Dressy & Festive Fall Church Outfits

Midi Skirt & Turtleneck Sweater

pleated taffeta skirt

For a formal church outfit, style a midi skirt like this pleated skirt and turtleneck in fall and winter. To balance out the fullness of the skirt, opt for a fitted or slightly fitted turtleneck. Since my skirt here is very simple, I went with a textured sweater to make it more interesting. If you have a colorful or printed midi skirt, opt for a simpler sweater to let the skirt shine.

Complete the look with strappy sandals, pumps closed-toe ankle boots and a chic camel coat for warmth. For a pop of color, I added a fun printed silk scarf here too.

Patterned Dress & Ankle Boots with Coat

If it’s not too cold, a fun patterned or textured dress like this can be so fun. The heavy weight of this embroidered style and rich autumnal colors make this the perfect one for fall. I paired it with a cozy camel wool coat and classic leather ankle boots.

I love that a statement dress like this allows oyu to show off your personal style, while remaining polished for Sunday morning.

Printed Pants and Crisp White Shirt with Pumps

I see pants like this pop up around the fall and holidays and I love the sophisticated outfits they create. They can be worn to church and also to any holiday parties—love when a piece does double duty.

To style printed pants with a crisp white dress shirt, tuck the shirt in for a polished look and let the vibrant patterns of the pants take center stage. To add a little more interest, finish the outfit with leopard-print pumps to add a touch of chic sophistication and a fun contrast to the ensemble, making it perfect for a stylish church setting.

Long Sleeve Dress & Boots

To style a long sleeve dress for a church setting, opt for a dress in a rich fall color or a subtle print to maintain elegance. Pair it with knee-high or ankle boots for warmth, and add a tailored coat or a fitted blazer for a polished finish. Complete the look with minimal accessories, such as a delicate necklace or simple earrings, to keep it sophisticated yet stylish.

Cashmere Sweater & Pencil Skirt

This classy outfit is a favorite and is so timeless and one of my favorites that I’ve ever styled for the blog. Depending on the colors you choose this can easily feel fun and festive, or more understated.

Pair a cashmere sweater and pencil skirt for a dressy church outfit, choose a more fitted cashmere sweater in a neutral or warm tone to create a sophisticated base. Since it’s tough to tuck fabric into a pencil skirt, opt for a sweater in a thin material, not a chunky one.

Add simple jewelry, a classic wool peacoat and pumps in a solid or pattern to complete the look.

Casual Church Outfits for Fall & Winter

Maxi Dress with Boots

Now onto some more comfortable outfits that still feel polished for church. To style a boho maxi dress with ankle boots, opt for a dress featuring vibrant prints or flowing fabrics that embody a relaxed, earthy vibe. Pair it with sleek ankle boots to add a touch of edge, and layer with a denim jacket or a cozy cardigan for warmth and texture, making the outfit perfect for a stylish yet comfortable look for Sundays.

Tan Sweater, Black Pants & Mules

For a polished church look, neutral colors are always a YES! Style a tan or beige sweater with tailored black pants for a chic and sophisticated silhouette. Pair the ensemble with sleek mules for comfort and ease, and consider adding simple gold accessories, like a delicate necklace or hoop earrings, to elevate the outfit without overpowering it.

If you have checked out my winter capsule wardrobe, these types of pieces can easily be mixed and matched for church looks.

Casual Dress with Ankle Boots

For a stylish fall church outfit, pair a casual dress with ankle boots to create a chic silhouette. Layer with a light jacket to stay warm, and accessorize with minimal jewelry and a subtle scarf to enhance your look while keeping it comfortable and respectful for the occasion. This is a great way to bring some of your spring and summer pieces into fall.

Midi Dress Layered with a Sweater

Similar to above, this layered outfit is a favorite! Throw a cozy sweater over your favorite midi dress and belt it at the waist for definition. This makes it look like you’re wearing a sweater and skirt and let’s you get more use out of your wardrobe.

Sweater, Corduroys & Ankle Boots

To style a sweater with wide-leg corduroys and ankle boots for church, choose a lightweight knit sweater in a warm, fall color to create a cozy yet sophisticated look. Tuck the front of the sweater slightly into the waistband of the corduroys to define your silhouette, and complete the outfit with chic ankle boots for a polished finish that remains comfortable throughout the service. I like Consider adding a minimalist belt and simple jewelry to elevate your look. For some added warmth, I threw a denim jacket over it to keep things casual.

Cozy Sweater & Wide Leg Pants

If you’ve been around here for long, you’ll know I love my wide leg pants. They’re chic and so comfortable and perfect to wear to church. To style a cozy sweater with wide-leg pants, opt for a chunky knit in a neutral or autumnal hue for added warmth and texture.

Pair it with high-waisted wide-leg trousers or dress pants to create a balanced silhouette, and finish the look with ankle boots, mules or fun ballet flats like these pointed red Mary Jane’s. Add your favorite simple jewelry and a black coat or camel trench coat when necessary.

Classic Black & White

One of the most classic pairings, right? You really can’t go wrong with this one. To make things feel fresh and unique, swap your typical black pants and a white top with white pants and a black top. Add a black blazer or a textured one and some ankle boots to finish the look.

To add a pop of color or pattern, consider adding a checkered coat or a mustard yellow coat.

Wide Leg Pants & Cozy Sweater

Lastly, one more fall church outfit to love! Style creamy colored wide-leg pants with a cozy knit sweater in a rich autumn color like chocolate brown, burgundy or a forest green sweater.

Not into white during winter, try a black trouser outfit with a creamy top or fall colored top for some fun color.

Complete the look with heeled ankle boots, patterned mules or your favorite ballet flats. And of course, if it’s chilly, through on your favorite jacket—like a wool or tweed one that fits the vibe of your church.

I hope you find this helpful in finding the perfect church outfit this fall and winter!
