One of my favorite pieces from my youth was my Hollister denim skirt—it was far too short and I wore it just about every chance I got. It was definitely an iconic piece during my high school days, so when I saw them making their way onto shelves again this year, I was excited. And also excited to see that they come in longer versions than my postage stamp-sized one from a decade ago.

Like denim jeans, denim skirts are so versatile and can be dressed up and down for so many occasions. In this post, we’ll talk about the different styles of denim skirts so you can decide which one is best for you and how to style a denim skirt several different ways to make the most of it in your wardrobe.

How To Style Denim Mini Skirts

Avoid Super Short Skirts

Okay, this might be obvious, but if you were like me in high school, this is worth mentioning! A mini denim skirt is fine, but we want to avoid the ones that nearly show off our tush, right? If you want something that’s shorter than midi, but not mini, opt for a knee length denim skirt. This will provide you with more coverage, but still have a youthful feel to it.

You can opt for a clean hem or a raw hem, whatever you prefer. I do find that a more tailored clean cut version is easier to dress up.

Opt for a Midi Skirt with a Slit

One style I am currently loving is the midi skirt with the slit up the front. I love that this style provides more coverage and a more updated, modest look to the denim skirt. It’s more refined and feels timeless.

While I prefer the midi length, I’ve even seen denim maxi skirts if that’s more your vibe.

Try Different Colors of Denim

While blue denim is my go-to, there are different washes, as well as different colors of denim skirts—white, black denim skirt, washed out grey! There are lots of different options to explore.

I love a good denim on denim look and this is how I’ve styled my own jean skirt several times. Pair with some sandals or heeled sandals depending on the occasion. Add a belt to break up the denim and provide definition at your waist.

Denim Skirt & a Tube Top

Okay, the fact that I even just typed ‘tube top’ takes me back to high school again, but they are making a major comeback and I have to say I love it! So much that I recently bought this tube top that also comes in a striped version that I adore. This outfit is perfect for a backyard party, a date night or a lunch date with girlfriends. Add a cardigan or denim jacket for an extra layer if you get cold like I do.

Denim Skirt & Blazer

Another classic pairing that works for spring and summer as well as fall is a denim midi skirt paired with a plain white t-shirt and an oversized blazer. This can look cool and casual with a pair of sandals or a pair of white sneakers for a more sporty look.

Denim Skirt & Crop Top

When pairing a denim skirt with a crop top, I recommend sticking with a midi length skirt that’s high-waisted. This will give you better proportions and keep the outfit looking chic. Toss on a denim jacket for an additional layer.

Denim Skirt & Sweater

This is such a fun way to wear denim and can be worn year round. For spring and summer, pair your skirt with a sweater tank, or open-stitch sweater that’s breathable and lightweight.

For fall and winter, pair your skirt with a cozy sweater and sneakers or boots. Throw on a long jacket for cooler days and a fun layered look.

Denim Skirt & Stripes

Whether it’s a striped tank top, striped tee, button-down or sweater, stripes are a classic and always look fresh. Test out different types of stripe shirts with your skirt to find new outfits.

Denim Skirt & Statement Top

Go bold for a work outfit or lunch with friends or date night! Pairing a statement top like this flowery blouse with a bold print or bright pop of color is such a fun way to wear those bold pieces in your closet.

Denim Skirt with Boots For Fall & Winter

During the warmer months, I typically pair my denim skirt sandals, but for winter, I opt for boots and ankle boots. For shorter skirts, you can wear booties or boots and with midi skirts, try ankle boots or a slim knee boots underneath for a cool, fashion-forward look.

Denim Skirt & a Long Coat

Lastly, take a casual outfit with a t-shirt and sneakers or chunky loafer and throw on an oversized long coat and a cool bag for an edgy and cool fall outfit that’s easy and effortless.

Hopefully you’re just as excited about the return of denim skirts as I am and I hope this gave you plenty of awesome minimalist outfit ideas to try!
