blazer and jeans outfit from the every day capsule wardrobe

A few weeks ago, I asked you guys what pieces you think every woman has in her closet. I tallied up your responses and these 13 items were the most common. I wanted to make you guys a capsule wardrobe that focused just on the basics that we probably all have in our wardrobe. My goal is to help you guys get more out of your wardrobe, not simply convince you that you need more. Sometimes having less actually forces us to get more creative with the things we already own.

This capsule wardrobe should help you find new ways to wear old favorites, or help you fill any holes you might have in your wardrobe.

Most of all, this is a guide! You can easily swap out different styles of jeans or white shirts or shoes to create even more outfits for yourself. Think of this as a jumping off point. I’m so excited about it and can’t wait to see what outfits you guys put together for yourselves!

The Every Day Capsule Wardrobe—13 pieces to create 80+ outfits #thefoxandshe

The Every Day Capsule Wardrobe Items:

Tops: White Tee | White Button Down | Black Tee | Slouchy Sweater

Bottoms: Black Jeans | Jeans | Leggings

Outerwear: Black Blazer | Denim Jacket | Cardigan

Shoes: White Sneakers | Booties | Flats

To start, I recommend you comb through your own closet and see which pieces you already have that fit the bill. Pull those aside so you can easily grab them. You can also swap different colors—for example, maybe you have a camel slouchy sweater you really love. Feel free to swap it in! Don’t have tan booties? Go with black! Etc, etc.—you guys get it.

If there are some holes or something that’s been loved for too long, I included some more options for all these pieces at different price points so you can find something that fits your budget.

Tops

White Tee

One of my favorite white t-shirts is from Everlane. It’s simple, crew neck and a little more fitted. I love how polished it looks and the price point is incredible. I know you can spend a lot of on a t-shirt, but I don’t think you need to.

White Button-Down

The shirt I included here is a washable silk button down. It’s super soft and beautiful and not super shiny like some silk shirts. I also love a good crisp cotton button down. You can never go wrong with that!

Black Tee

I bought this slouchy black tee from Abercrombie a while back and it is so comfortable! If you have a white tee that’s more slouchy already, opt for a fitted black tee to add something more polished to your capsule. A black bodysuit would be a great fill in here too!

Slouchy Sweater

I love a good slouchy sweater! I have several in all different neutrals. Which makes it easy to mix and match and create even more outfits from similar pieces. I have this grey one in ivory and the price is great! It’s been a really sturdy piece and held up really well. If you’re wanting to invest in something nicer, I absolutely adore this sweater from Able. The drop sleeves and mock-neck are amazing.

Pants

Black Jeans

My favorite pair of black jeans is from Madewell. They don’t make the exact pair anymore, but this pair is very similar. I’ve found Madewell jeans to be a pretty good price point for the quality.

Jeans

One item I can guarantee you all have in you closet! And you might even own several pairs? I wear jeans all the time, so having a few different styles and washes is great for switching things up. I love a good skinny pair and I also love a distressed ankle length mom jean—probably my most worn!

Leggings

So many of you said leggings! I love my faux leather pair from Spanx and highly recommend them. They do run a bit small, so I’d order a size up. If you don’t want to spend that much on leggings (though, I promise it’s worth it!), try this pair.

Outerwear

Black Blazer

This oversized black blazer from Everlane is a classic! It fits like a dream—in fact, all their blazers do. Here’s another one at a lower price point.

Denim Jacket

This is actually my first denim jacket—I know, I’m weird, but I’m glad I held out because this one is incredible! It’s a bit of a splurge, but I think it’s absolutely worth it. It’s lightly distressed and fits so well. Here are a few others at different price points.

Cardigan

I live in cardigans and most of mine are neutrals, so again, this allows me to swap out the color to create more outfits. I’ve had so much luck with Amazon cardigans and the prices are always so low! I continue to be so impressed with the quality of these pieces too!

Shoes

White Sneakers

I love me a pair of sneakers!! I’m truly a sneakers girl for life—you?! I included several different pairs here because they range in price greatly and they all have a different vibe. I still swear by my Golden Goose, which comes with a hefty price tag, but I can guarantee I have worn them more than any other pair of shoes in my closet. That’s a good investment in my opinion!

Booties

A good pair of tan booties is essential in my book. They go with everything and can be worn year round! If you have several pairs in different colors, even better—more outfits for you! Here are a few of my favorites right now:

Flats

My go-to flat is a mule, but feel free to swap these out for your favorite ballet flats or loafers—whatever works for you. And, if brown isn’t your thing, go black or even leopard to add some pattern to your closet. I love this pair from Madewell, and if you’re looking to invest in a nice pair, Jenni Kayne’s mules are the best I’ve ever worn (this pair is on my wishlist for fall!)

Outfits

Now that we’ve got all the pieces nailed down, let’s make some outfits! Instead of putting all 80+ outfits in this post (that would get really long!), I compiled them into this handy PDF that’s totally free to you!

I hope you guys use this to make new outfits from stuff you already have in your closet and feel like you’re able to get more out of your wardrobe! Tag me in any outfits you wear!
