Camel Coat, wearing a 2 | Lace Cami, size small (also love this one that’s budget-friendly) | Leopard Skirt, size 0 | Strappy Heels, similar | Stella Fold-Over Clutch | Indio Sunglasses
I remember a conversation Rob and I had before Owen was born—”we’ll never be those people that stop going out just because we have kids!” we foolishly told ourselves. Ha, little did we know that staying in would sound so much better than going out!?!
Despite the fact that we’ve become homebodies, we still love a good date night. Admittedly, we don’t have the best schedule, but we’re working on it. In a perfect world, I’d love to go on a date every week, but sometimes it just doesn’t happen.
I’d say on average we’re more like 2 a month—mostly because we’re very last minute planners. Oh, and babysitters get really freaking expensive. If your parents watch your kids for free, be SO thankful!
We went on a date two weekends ago and it was so amazing! No, we didn’t do anything crazy or go to some cool, hip new restaurant. In fact, it was pretty much the opposite. We went to Athenian Room, and old favorite, had drinks at the bar (which is not fancy) next door beforehand, and then grabbed a drink at a spot right by our house before we went home.
What I’ve realized is that it’s not always about doing cool new things together, it’s simply about getting out and spending time together one-on-one. I always find that we have great conversations and generally just get on the same page, and really connect.
It’s crazy how we can spend so many hours together during the week, but not actually catch up on each other’s lives because there’s so much other stuff happening—late night work, getting Owen ready for bed, doing something on our own that we’re passionate about. There’s never enough time when you have kids, and even when you don’t have kids, work and life can get crazy.
I can feel a huge difference in our relationship when we take the time to prioritize our marriage and plan dates. Sure, you could say that we could do this at home, but it’s just not the same! Either we’re ordering takeout, or I’m cooking, and it’s just not the same as getting to sit down, order a glass of wine and chat, while someone else does all the work!
All this date talk has me thinking we’re due for a date this week! Yes, we’re typically creatures of habit over here, but if there’s anywhere new you’ve tried lately and loved, please let me know in the comments!
