How to Save Money When You Shop Online

how to save money online

I can’t remember where I first heard about Honey or why it never occurred to me to share it earlier, but suddenly it dawned on me that you guys would probably love this little trick as much as I do. If you ever do any online shopping, and let’s be real, who doesn’t? You need Honey. And no, this is not sponsored, but it’s just a fun little trick that I really love and wanted to share with you guys!

Just this past month I saved $85 on wedding gifts for friends on West Elm, $125 on new fall clothes to fit the bump on J.Crew, Shopbop & Modcloth, and $25 on skincare products I’d run out of. That right there is $235! And, that’s only counting the things I remember buying this month (I blame pregnancy brain)! The best part was that I was going to buy all of these things anyway. It wasn’t like I was shopping because I knew the code existed or they were having a sale. I simply needed those products and would have happily purchased them at full-price, but finding out there were discount codes upon checkout was SWEET! That’s what makes this little trick so awesome in my book, it saved me money that I didn’t even know I could save.

How to Save Money Online

What Is It?

No, I’m not talking about the golden, sticky stuff that I love putting in my coffee, this Honey is an extension or plugin that works with the Google Chrome browser and helps you save money by trying out different coupon codes for any site you shop on.

Do I Really Need It?

No, I guess not. Your life will go on without it, but you will spend more money if you don’t have it. So, if you like saving money and not always having to pay full-price, then you totally need it. Sure, you could also do your own research to find discount codes for that site and manually try each one, but why would you when Honey does it automatically. I also forget about discount codes—I’ll even have one on hand and finish check out to realize I forgot to add my savings which is insanely frustrating. Since Honey pops up automatically, I never forget!

What’s In It For Me?

I’m always hesitant to use things like this, like is it really going to work? Is it worth the time it takes me set it up? If you have a couple of extra minutes in your day, then I’d say YES. It takes just a few seconds to sign up with your email address or Facebook account. All you have to do is add the extension to Google Chrome (also super easy) and whenever you get to the checkout page on a retauler, it’ll pop up to let you know if there are any codes worth trying. Just hit the button and it automatically tries them all for you! And there you have it—savings that you didn’t know you could get, magically appear. You’ll also sometimes get Cash Bonuses which add up over time. Pretty sweet, right?

I also just learned that they have a travel site that allows you to search for travel deals in several major U.S. cities. This part is new, but I bet it continues to grow! I won’t be traveling for a bit, but when we do, I’ll be checking this out.

Lastly, it’s free. Yep, totally free, so… why would you not use it?!

Any Negatives?

You won’t get a discount code every time, but that’s the only downside I can see! Even if you don’t get a discount on that purchase, there’s often Cash Bonuses for products you purchase, so you’re still getting a little something that you wouldn’t have otherwise.

There you have it, the easiest trick I’ve found for saving money when I shop online. Once it’s installed, you really don’t have to think about it anymore! Do you have any tips or tricks for saving money when shopping online? If so, please share below!
