In my latest capsule wardrobe, Summer 2026, I feature a denim shirt. It might not be the first thing you think of that would fit into a capsule collection, but what I love about it is how versatile it is. I mean, it makes sense. We wear denim jeans with everything, we’re just sort of flipping the script here and let me tell you, it works.
I find that a denim shirt can work similar to a white shirt. Of course, it may not work with everything, but so far, I’m finding it’s a very flexible piece to have in your closet.
Like most pieces you buy, I always suggest that you consider how many times you can wear something before you buy it. Think about what else it will work with in your closet and make sure you can wear it several ways before you hit purchase. Thankfully, a denim shirt is one of the most well-rounded pieces you can have in your wardrobe.
Denim Shirt Types:
Sleeveless Denim Shirts
For summer, this is the style I find myself reaching for the most. Why? Well, when it’s super hot, it’s nice having a lightweight tank helps keep you cool and stylish. I currently have two different styles in my closet. One’s a bit more structured which can definitely look more elevated, while the other is more feminine and playful.
Button-Up Denim Shirts
Another super common denim shirt is a chambray button-up. This style is one you can wear year round which I love. It’s just like wearing a regular button up in a different fabric. You can often find them in different weights and washes, so pick one that works for your personal style and the season you’ll be wearing it in. I find that lighter washes look best in warmer months and darker ones feel right for the fall and winter.
Western Denim Shirts
In my mind, this is sort of a subset of a denim button up. Western shirts just have a touch of western flair to them like pearl snaps, styling details like points in the pockets and stitching. Personally, the Western vibe isn’t quite right for my personal style, but I do think it can look cool with the right wardrobe.
Short Sleeve Denim Shirts
A short sleeve denim shirt is a nice middle-ground and great if you want something to wear during warmer months, but don’t want to show off your shoulders. I personally lean towards the slightly cropped (but not short enough to show your stomach), boxier cuts that look cool and structured.
How to Style a Denim Shirt
Whether you have a denim shirt that looks just like this, or a different variation, these will all be good be good jumping off points for your denim shirt outfit. In most of the outfits here, I’m wearing this denim shell and this denim tank with a tie front.
Denim Shirt with Green Pants

Denim and green is a CLASSIC color combination and one that pretty much always works. I actually find that most of my closet falls into this color combination (with some white and neutrals mixed in too). It’s easy and effortless. Here I’m wearing green linen trousers, but I’ve also worn a similar outfit with green twill pants and these green barrel jeans with a fun floral print.
To make even more outfits from this one combination, swap out different styles of denim shirts, green pants, and different shoes and accessories.
Denim with Striped Pants

These striped poplin pants have been one of my favorite purchases of summer (they go out of stock fast, so make sure you’re on their list if they’re currently sold out as they restock often), and the light blue shade in here pulls out the denim color perfectly. They have an elastic waistband and hit my ankle at the perfect length. What I love about this outfit is that it’s casual enough for everyday, but these pants are a heavier weight cotton that holds their shape, so they can easily feel more dressed up too. I paired this with these simple and ultra comfy sandals.
If you have a striped skirt in just about any colors, this would be such a fun outfit. I love mixing a pattern with a solid, especially when the shirt is more structured like this one.
Denim Shirt with White Midi Skirt

I love the play here between the more structured top and feminine skirt with pintucks and more volume. They balance each other out and make for a great, easy to wear outfit that would work for the office or everyday wear. I made this skirt, but there are so many similar versions out there like this one, this one and this one.
To give this simple look more personality, add a colorful necklace or a fun pair of shoes—I love these woven flats. The key to bringing any outfit to life in my opinion is mixing textures, scale and fabrics.
Denim Top with Brown Pants

Yes, these pants do look a little bit on the green side here, but they’re technically a brown twill called light roast. But a true brown or a warm caramel brown is gorgeous with a lighter blue denim shirt like I’m wearing here or a darker denim as well. The balance of warm and cool colors is perfect and classic.
This rainbow necklace is a favorite and goes with so many simple outfits! I wear it ALL the time!
Denim Shirt & White Pants

Will blue and white ever not be a good combo? I think not! It’s classic, but can be worked to fit your own personal style. Here, I wore it with some of my favorite pants, these cinch barrel leg jeans, these insanely comfy and worth-every-penny fisherman sandals and this cute top from J.Crew factory. Add in a fun patterned bag and some layered gold jewelry, this look is one I’ll reach for over and over again.
Denim Shirt & Leopard Pants

These barrel leg leopard jeans were an impulse buy from Amazon, and I have worn them SO many times! This pair runs big so I recommend ordering a size down. Again, I really love how the structured denim top plays against these fun and unexpected pants.
I added a pop of color with my boat shoes that have a red leather pom pom on them. It’s a small detail, but I think it makes the whole outfit feel cool and unexpected. If it’s too hot, swap boat shoes for a black sandal.
Denim on Denim (Canadian Tuxedo)

This is such a classic combo and can be done so many different ways! I’m wearing a loose-fitting denim button up here with my wide leg jeans that are so comfortable and well-priced. I love an easy look like this for winter and fall. Just add some fun accessories with some color or a cool baseball hat and sneakers to round out the outfit.
There you have it, several different ways to style your denim shirts. I hope this helps you realize just how versatile a denim shirt can be and gives you plenty of outfit ideas to copy right now!
