We’ve entered into one of the most amazing phases of toddler life—independent play. We always encouraged this in the past, but his attention span wouldn’t last that long and he’d be back at my feet trying to get me to hold him or play with him within minutes.
Now, he’ll get his toys and play for so long by himself. It’s one of my favorite things to watch because a) I get a break, ha, and b) watching his little wheels turn is so magical. His brows get furrowed as he gets super focused trying to figure out how to put blocks together or stack things.
It reminds me of my dad and it’s the cutest thing ever.
He loves running cars around the floor and putting them in the ‘garage’, which just means any box or tupperware he can find.
Since he’s so obsessed with cars and anything with wheels, we just ordered some new things for him. If I’m being honest, we don’t have a ton of toys. Mostly because we have a small space, but secondly, I’m selective about the toys I pick for him. I want them to be engaging, not just things that entertain him. I also find that having less items to pick from keeps him engaged for longer. When there’s too much it’s like it’s information overload and he can’t decide!
You guys know that I love Walmart for it’s quick shipping, so we ordered this Thomas & Friends wooden train set, this Hot Wheels set (currently his obsession!) and Kinetic Sand (I’ve heard this is so fun!) last week and they showed up 2 days later. There were so many options to pick from and had everything easily sorted so you could find exactly what you were looking for without scrolling through a gazillion pages. They also have a Birthday Party page that can suggest gift ideas for different ages which I know will be so helpful as the birthday parties start!
What I love about these is that they force him to be imaginative and just play. The train set is actually really fun, and him and Rob have loved putting it together.
The kinetic sand is also really fun, but better suited for outside because, well, it’s sand! It’s such a great sensory activity for him and the first time I’ve had anything like this at home. Plus, I actually enjoy playing with it too, ha!
What toys does/did your toddler love? Anyone else’s kids love cars and trains as much as Owen?!
Thanks to Walmart, a brand I love and trust, for sponsoring this post. Thank you for supporting the brands that make The Fox & She possible!
