I have people tell me all the time how lucky I am to work from home. Is it awesome being your own boss? I bet you save so much on dog sitting! Isn’t it nice to work from your pajamas?!

The last one always makes me laugh because I would get nothing done if I stayed in my pajamas all day! I love working at home and while it’s got its perks, it also has drawbacks. Sure, I can do laundry and dishes in between work, I don’t have to pay a dog walker to take Oliver out every day, but let’s not forget that most days I’m alone—all day long.

Don’t get me wrong, I very much value my alone time, but sometimes you just want some coworkers to chat with! And, thankfully I have several friends that also work from home so we schedule work dates and times to get out of the house so we don’t go crazy! But, I’ll be honest, finding and staying in a routine when you work from home is much harder than it sounds.

Though each day is a little different, I have a loose schedule I adhere to, but I still struggle with shutting down at the end of the day. When my desk is located in the middle of our apartment, it’s tougher to walk away and end my work day or leave any stress or unfinished “at the office”. If you don’t have set office hours, it’s easy to keep working and working, but I think we can agree, that’s not a good plan.

As I continue on creating a more peaceful and balanced life for myself, I’m finding that it’s been increasingly important to separate work and life even though they live in the same place, so I don’t get too stressed out or caught up in work. I’ve been practicing a new end of the day routine that’s lead to a better, more relaxed me and I have a feeling you’ll want to implement a few of these things too (even if you don’t work from home!)

Set Office Hours

Creating actual office hours helps me keep my days more structured and efficient. I typically start my day around 9:30-10 and end it at 6. This makes it feel more like a “real” job and keeps me on task! Getting my day started is easy for me, but shutting down is tough, so I set a reminder for 15 minutes before the end of my work day.

Shut Down your Office

During those 15 minutes I make sure I save anything I’m currently working on, close down all the programs on my computer and send out any last minute emails. I also like to tidy up my desk so that when I sit down the next day, I feel at ease. When the second alarm goes off, I shut down my computer and leave my desk. It might sound a little rigid, but it truly helps to create a good work/life balance.

Take a Moment to Decompress

After everything is shut down, it’s a little tough for me to instantly go into relaxation mode. I’m usually a little wound up and I don’t think alone here. It’s especially tough if you’ve had a long day.

If you work in an office, you probably have a commute home that allows you to decompress a bit, but if you work at home, you’re likely missing that step. In this in between time, I find myself tidying up the house, going for a quick workout, or if it’s nice outside, Oliver and I will go for a quick stroll in the neighborhood. You could also meditate, go for a bike ride, or walk around the block-whatever helps you! It doesn’t have to be a long break—just 15 minutes will do the trick—but something to help your body and mind decompress from the day is helpful in starting your evening on a relaxing note. It also helps you destress!

Unwind & Relax

After you’ve had a little time to decompress, relaxing and unwinding becomes a whole lot easier because your mind is mentally prepared for it. The time I spend indulging in a little something that’s just for me is one way I like to treat myself. It’s a really simple routine, but it feels so indulgent to have this time to myself to enjoy a few things I love. As women, I think know we have a hard time treating ourselves and acknowledging our accomplishments both big and small, but it’s so important that we do. Taking a moment to remind yourself that you’re worthy and deserving of a beautiful, creative and vibrant life will help you continue to create that life. It’s been so nice to end my day this way! By the time Rob comes home from work, I’m good and relaxed and ready to spend some quality time with him and cook dinner. Another added benefit? I usually sleep really well because my mind and body had the time to unwind and enjoy life’s little joys.
