Fall Capsule Wardrobe (+ Outfit Ideas)

It’s here! I’ve been teasing towards this post for a while now and I’m so excited it’s finally live. Who knew it would take so long for me to pull this thing together, haha! Either way, I’m really excited about this because so many of you requested a capsule wardrobe and style posts on how to wear the same pieces multiple ways. A capsule wardrobe does essentially that!

I have several more style posts coming later this month featuring these pieces worn more ways and I’ll continue to update this page with more outfits as I wear them, so when you need more inspiration, pop over! I’m adding a tab for this under ‘Style’ so it’s easy to find!

20-Piece Fall Capsule Wardrobe + tons of outfit ideas (you probably already own a bunch of these!)

The Capsule Wardrobe

The best part about this capsule wardrobe is that it’s made up of closet staples and basics. There are a few statement pieces, but the goal is to help you make more use out of the stuff you already have while investing in some classics that you might not have yet!

Tops

White Tee:

You’ve probably already got one in your closet, but I was surprised to find that for as many white tops as I had, not a single one was a plain tee! I’d forgotten that my old one had a hole in it. I picked up this affordable pocket v-neck tee and have been wearing it a ton. A good white t-shirt is a must really. It makes for the easiest outfit!

Black Sweater:

A black sweater is so versatile. It can be dressed up or down and paired with just about anything (including more black!). I love this bubble sleeve mockneck sweater that I snagged during the Shopbop Sale that’s currently happening!

Stripes:

I’m a sucker for a good stripe shirt! This one is my most recent addition and one of my favorites because it’s nicer than a stripe tee. That being said, I have a ton of stripe tees, so make use of what you have if you don’t want to buy a new one.

Plaid Shirt:

Pretty sure this is just a fall staple! I love this cozy flannel one and have several in my closet. It’s a really versatile piece perfect for winter too.

Neutral Sweater:

I live in sweaters during the fall and I think every girl needs a good neutral or tan sweater. I snagged this cozy one and this pom one (worn in this post) from Evereve recently and I absolutely love them!

Something Green:

I love green. I think it adds a nice contrast to lots of neutrals, and frankly, it is a neutral in my mind! Whether it’s a green sweater (above), tee, bag, cardigan or anorak (one of my favorite pieces ever), having some green in your fall wardrobe is essential.

Camel Cardigan:

I’m known around my house as a cardigan queen and pretty much always have one on or in my bag. If you’re going to get just one, I highly suggest you make it a camel one. It’s neutral, goes with everything and looks really chic.

Long Coat:

It’s not quite cold enough for a heavy winter coat, but I’m all about layers, and a long open sweater coat like this one or this one are ideal for the in-between weather.

*White Oxford:

Instead of a white tee, a white button up or oxford would be great and a little bit dressier if you don’t wear t-shirts very often.

*Chambray Shirt:

I really should have included this in here because I think every girl needs a good chambray shirt. My favorites are this long sleeve one and this short sleeve one. I wear both constantly!

*Leather Coat:

If you have one, great! Make use of it! I think leather and suede coats are perfect for fall. They’re typically shorter and not as warm as your winter coat, so this is the time to wear them. I love this suede one and this leather one!

Bottoms

Denim Skirt:

Who else is excited that denim skirts are back?! I bought one and honestly wasn’t sure how much I was going to wear it. Guess what? I’ve been wearing it constantly. It looks cute with sweaters, tees, booties, sneakers—so versatile! This one isn’t too short which is great for mamas and I also love this black one if that’s more your thing!

Wide Leg Pants:

Another trend I was slow to warm up to were wide leg pants, but they’re growing on me. They look simple and chic and are especially great for work days where I have meetings and want to feel more pulled together.

Overalls:

A mom life staple! These look so fun and are perfect for the park and even paired with booties for a fun girl’s night outfit. I think the black is a little more chic, but love a denim pair too!

Jeans:

I know you have these! I have several different styles and pairs in my closet and if you’re in need of a few more pairs, I’d snag some during Shopbop’s Sale! Also, I love these skinny jeans, this distressed pair (shown in collage) and this straight leg, looser fit.

Black Jeans:

As much as I love jeans, sometimes you need something that looks a little nicer. Black jeans are perfect for that, and in my opinion, the blacker, the better! The darker they are, the nicer they look. I love this pair with a raw hem and button fly.

Shoes & Accessories

Leopard Flats:

I have a couple of pairs of leopard flats, including these, in my closet and they are my most worn flats. They add personality and excitement to any simple outfit. Treat them like a neutral and wear away! If you’re not into leopard shoes, I also love this leopard cardigan—such a fun pop in your wardrobe!

White Sneakers:

These are a must-have in my book. They look so much better than normal athletic shoes and go with everything. Depending on whether or not you have kids, the style might change for you, but I’ve rounded up some of my favorite pairs below!

Mules or Loafers:

I have both in my closet—they’re great staples and since they are flat, they’re pretty comfy for wearing all day. I snagged this pair of mules (I styled them twice in this post) and they are so comfortable. My favorite loafers are these from Everlane that come in a bunch of colors! I have midnight (worn here and here) and the tan which I just got!

Grey Booties:

Maybe not totally essential, but I think every girl needs a pair of booties or heels for dates, nights out, etc. I got this pair at Evereve and I’m so in love with them. They’re comfortable and go with everything! I styled them several ways in this post.

Brown Leather Bag:

If you buy just one bag for fall, make it a brown leather one. It’s classic, goes with everything and will be in your closet for years. Two of my favorites are this one with a magnetic closure (holds a 15″ laptop too) and the classic transport tote (worn here and here)

Brown Booties:

Lastly, brown booties! Whether you have suede or leather, heeled or flat, these are a must-have! I wear them constantly and the warm tones go with nearly every other piece in my capsule wardrobe!

I’ll continue to add to this as I snap more pictures, but I wanted to share a few outfits that I’ve already pulled together! Next week, I’m sharing my first installment of how to style a piece 3 ways. Overalls are up first and I’m so excited! I wasn’t 100% sure about them at first, but they are so comfortable, cute and versatile and I’m excited to share that with you guys!
