May 2015 Numbers

For the purpose of these reports, I’ll only be discussing the earnings from my fashion blog, The Fox & She since all of you probably don’t have a design company too.

I just realized that I skipped April — oops! I blame it on all the travel I’ve had lately as well as being incredibly busy. Nothing new or ground-breaking happened that month, so I’m just going to leave it as skipped and move straight to May. The last report I did was for March and it was skewed because I had sold so many paintings that month. This month is far more representative of a normal month for my blog. I did try some new things, so read on to see what I’ve been trying. I also decided to include a pie chart of my total income so that you get an idea of what I make from my blog. It’s only a small (but growing) portion of my income and I also wanted you to have a more realistic idea of where my monthly income comes from.

So, without further ado, May’s income report…

AFFILIATE LINKS — 9.8%

This was a slow month for commissions for me and I only made commission from RewardStyle. Even considering that I only made money from one affiliate network this month, it was especially low. I’m not quite sure why. I decided to quit ShopSense though. It worked well for a few months, but I felt like I the clicks to commission rate was much lower than it should have been and it continually got lower, so I finally ditched it. I also don’t like their widgets near as much as RS, so I’m okay with it. VigLink is an easy affiliate. It automatically plugs in affiliate links on keywords, but I can’t find any payment from them from May, so I guess I didn’t make anything. I usually make very little from that one, so it’s not too much of a surprise, but it’s a nice little extra on month’s that I do.

AD NETWORKS – 6.8%

Both Stylist and Lijit paid out better than normal this month. I had a few posts this month that had really high traffic and I think that could be the reason for the higher numbers in ad revenue this month.

SPONSORED CONTENT & COLLABORATIONS — 71%

I was paid out for five collaborations this month which was great! This is my favorite content to produce and in coming months, I’m hoping to make strides here and start reaching out to companies myself instead of waiting for them to come to me.

Collaborations come from networks that I’m already a part of as well as directly from brands. There are a lot of great collaboration-style networks out there that can be great ways of getting new collaborations. Adorn Media Group, Clever Girls, Collectively, Glam/Mode, Pollinate, PopSugar Select and StyleList are just a few (note: I have only used a few of these, so can’t speak to all of them)!

PRODUCT SALES — 11.5%

Right now I have no completed artwork. I actually think I might sell a few pieces we have in our house, but I haven’t had time to get them shot and up on the site. I sell art prints through Minted which pays out quarterly, so I just got paid for the first quarter. It’s not a ton, but to not have to do any work and still get some cash feels pretty awesome!

TRAFFIC

Even though I skipped April, these numbers are representative of the growth from the end of April to the end of May. I was surprised to see that Twitter (followed closely by Facebook) is now my second top referral. LeapBlogDesign.com hold the second top referral spot for months and months. It’s exciting to see social growth paying off in more traffic to my site.

SOCIAL

As I mentioned before, Instagram and Pinterest are by far my favorite social platforms, likely because I’m a visual person. I still get the majority of my traffic from Pinterest (Instagram no longer ranks in here anymore.. need to look into this). Twitter was my second top referral and I associate that to my recent growth on that platform.

GOALS FOR NEXT MONTH

• Grow my Facebook following — this a big driver of traffic and I really need to focus more attention here
• Stay ahead! I’m traveling a lot this month and my main goal this month is just to stay ahead so I can stress less

Most of my business goals this month are actually directed at this site. I have a lot of exciting content scheduled and some new things in the works for coming months — stay tuned!
